Computer Software

COMPUTER SOFTWARES

Software is a set of instructions, data or programs used to operate computers and execute specific tasks. It is the intangible, non-physical part of a computer system, as opposed to hardware, and enables users to interact with the device and run applications. Software is essential for a computer’s operation and is broadly divided into two main categories: system software, which manages the computer’s internal functions, and application software, which performs specific user tasks.

Other types of software include the following:

  • Programming software, which provides the programming tools software developers need.
  • Middleware, which sits between system software and applications.
  • Driver software, which operates computer devices and peripherals.

Early software was written for specific computers and sold with the hardware it ran on. In the 1980s, software began to be sold on floppy disks and, later, CDs and DVDs. Today, most software is purchased and directly downloaded over the internet.

Examples and types of software

Among the various categories of software, the most common types include the following:

  • System software. These software programs are designed to run a computer’s application programs and hardware. System software coordinates the activities and functions of the hardware and software. In addition, it controls the operations of the computer hardware and provides an environment or platform for all the other types of software to work in. An operating system (OS) is the best example of system software; it manages all the other computer programs. Other examples of system software include firmware, computer language translators and system utilities software.
  1. An operating system (OS) is fundamental system software that manages computer’s hardware and software resources, acting as an intermediary between the user and the computer. It performs essential tasks like managing memory, handling file storage, controlling input/output (I/O) devices, and allocating the Central Processing Unit (CPU) to different programs. The three most common operating systems for personal computers are Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, and Andriod for smart phones.
  2. Device Drivers are a type of system software that act as a bridge between the operating system and hardware devices. It’s specialized program that tells the operating system how to interact with specific hardware. some examples of device driversprinter drivers, Graphics drivers, Sound drivers, Network drivers etc
  3. Utility Software is a type of system software designed to help maimtain, manage, and protect a computer system. it suppoorts the operating system but fprcues on keeping the system efficient, secure, and error-free. Examples, Antivirus Software, File Compression tools, Backup utilities.
  • Application Softwares: is a type of computer software designed to help the user perform a specific task or solve a particular problems. Web browsers like Firefox, and Google Chrome, as well as Microsoft Word and Excel, are examples of application software that is used on a personal computer or laptop. It also includes smartphone apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram, as well as games such as Candy Crush Saga and Ludo.
